FIFA general secretary concerned about match fixing

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke expressed his concern over match fixing in the ongoing FIFA World Cup, 2014 in Brazil.

While speaking to Sportv, Valcke said that there was no way to know whether the games played during the World Cup was fixed. He added, “It exists and it’s something that we are not going to eliminate hundred percent,” the governing body’s World Cup chief said. He added, “It happens at the highest level and at the lower levels. What we can do is control legal betting. We work with two companies that monitor this around the world. But it’s very difficult to fight against what is done behind the scenes.”

A German magazine Spiegel claimed the Group A match between Cameroon and Croatia on June 18 was manipulated. The magazine stated that Cameroon came to terms with a betting ring prior to the match. Days later FIFA revealed the match between Cameroon and Brazil on June 23 was at risk of being rigged. Media reports said FIFA was alarmed only after Cameroon’s early exit from the tournament and reports of conflict within the team.
