Belo Horizonte (Brazil): Jun 17, 2014
Coach Marc Wilmots and captain Vincent Kompany don’t want to raise expectations from Belgium too high in the FIFA World Cup 2014.
Belgium are in Group H with Algeria, Russia and South Korea. They have been dubbed the dark horses of the tournament and open their campaign against Algeria here Tuesday, reports EFE.
Belgium are back in the World Cup after a 12-year absence and Wilmots said the Belgians are under no pressure to perform.
“The pressure is worse for Brazil, which is the host. Nobody expects us to do something important. It is a pleasure for me and the staff to represent 18 million Belgians in this great tournamentâ, said Wilmots, who has played for Belgian in four World Cups.
Kompany, who plays for Manchester City, said Belgiumâs preparations for the game against Algeria have been perfect and they are confident of putting up a terrific display.
“I am happy and grateful not only for being the captain of the team but to represent my country,” said Kompany, who will be playing his first World Cup match a decade after making his international debut.
