A comprehensive effort with the bat and bowl helped India A beat England Lions by 138 runs in the second one-day game in Trivandrum on Friday, putting the home team up 2-0 in the five-match series.

Fifties to Ajinkya Rahane (92), Hanuma Vihari (92) and Shreyas Iyer (65) helped India A get to 303/8 after Sam Billings opted to field, which proved more than ample to beat England Lions. Each of the six bowlers used managed at least one wicket, with Mayank Markande claiming the best returns of 3/32 and Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur getting two each.

The early extraction of Anmolpreet Singh for 7 gave the touring team a lift, but they were soon pushed back by a stand of 209 between Rahane and Vihari. Rahane’s 91 came off 117 deliveries and featured four fours and four sixes. In his last one-day match in October, Rahane had scored 144 not out off 156 balls to set up India C’s title win in the Deodhar Trophy final. Vihari made 92 off 93 balls, hitting eights fours and four sixes. Iyer was last out in the 50th over, having smacked 65 from 47 balls highlighted by five fours and two sixes. Around these three fifties, Anmolpreet, Ankit Bawne (18) and Ishan Kishan (3) were the batsmen dismissed for low scores.

For England Lions, Gregory Lewis (2/61) and Zak Chappel (2/47) were the most productive bowlers.

The chase never got going, with wickets falling in the fifth, sixth, 12th and 13th overs. Alex Davies top-scored with 48 from 63 balls before he was sixth out at 100 in the 21st over, lbw to Axar. Gregory made 39 off 46 balls to get the total past 150, and was the final wicket to fall to give the spinner Markande his third.

Markande earlier had Billings and Will Jacks dismissed cheaply while Kaul bowled Ollie Pope for zero and Shardul got Sam Hain and Dom Bess.

Brief scores: India A 303/6 in 50 overs (Vihari 92, Rahane 91, Iyer 65) beat England Lions 165 in 37.4 overs (Davies 48, Markande 3/32)
