Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live blog of the first day of the first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa at Chittagong. This is Nikhil Popat, and I will be bringing you the live cricket scores and updates of the match. Bangladesh suffered a 0-2 whitewash in the Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) but the home side surprised one and all by beating South Africa comprehensively in the One-Day Internationals (ODIs) 2-1. The fact that they came back after losing the first game was credit to their temperament. It is in Tests though that they have to catch up with the rest of world, will they do it or will South Africa continue their good form in the whites. What a comeback, what a comeback from Bangladesh! South Africa were cruising at 136 for 1 but have been bowled out for a score of 248. Mustafizur Rahman did the most of the damage with three big wickets in an over. He had Amla, Duminy, de Kock in an over. Bavuma scored his maiden Test fifty to take them to this total. What a day for them, they will want to continue this momentum going forward with the bat tomorrow. Do join for us tomorrow, until then, it’s goodbye and take care!
Live cricket score: Bangladesh 7/0 | Overs 2 | Batting: Tamim Iqbal 1(1), Imrul Kayes 5(12): There is no stopping from Bangladesh! They go after Dale Steyn despite knowing he might just be bowling a couple of overs tonight. Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes are out there batting for the home side. Vernon Philander will bowl the second over from the other end and gives away just a sole run from that over. End of a superb day for Bangladesh!
Some magnificent bowling from Bangladesh has ensured South Africa are been bowled out for a score of under 250 on this track. It is by no means a track that the score may suggest. The ball is turning a bit but by no means should South Africa have scored only that many after being 136 for one at one stage. Bangladesh will have a short session to play out, if they play it out without losing any wicket, boy, they will be delighted with their work.
Live cricket score: South Africa 248| Overs 83.4 | Batting: Morne Morkel 3(7): Oh dear! Mohammad Shahid misses out another wicket as this time Shakib Al Hasan drops a sitter of a chance at first slip. He then traps Morkel plumb in front but the ball pitched outside leg. Bangladesh waste a review. Rahman gets the final one as he gets Bavuma caught at mid-wicket.
OUT! T Bavuma c Jubair b M Rahman 54(108)
Live cricket score: South Africa 241/9 | Overs 80 | Batting: Morne Morkel 0(2), Temba Bavuma 50(91): The clouds are building but Bangladesh strike with the wicket Harmer as Mominul takes a blinder at forward short leg. He gets off the mark with a nice drive through mid on. Second new ball is available now but looks like he might not even be needed. Dale Steyn looks to go big but finds Tamim Iqbal at mid off. What a collapse this has been from South Africa! Bavuma gets to his fifty at the other end, scores his maiden Test fifty!
OUT! Simon Harmer c Mominul b Jubair 9(37)
OUT! Dale Steyn c Iqbal b Jubair 2(1)
Live cricket score: South Africa 227/7 | Overs 76 | Batting: Simon Harmer 6(26), Temba Bavuma 42(81): Thick clouds are building over the stadium at Chittagong. Harmer has looked good so far and Bavuma continues his good display, nearing a fifty. Shakib has come on to bowl but has not quite given Bangladesh the breakthrough they are looking for.
Live cricket score: South Africa 209/7 | Overs 71 | Batting:Simon Harmer 0(1), Temba Bavuma 35(76): Bangladesh are still searching for a wicket as Vernon Philander and Temba Bavuma are playing really well. Bavuma in particular was looked really good. Mohammad Shahid would have been rewarded with a wicket but for Imrul Kayes to drop one at first slip and it works in the very next over, Jubair has Philander caught at first slip by Shakib.
OUT! Vernon Philander c Shakib b Jubair 24(36)
Live cricket score: South Africa 186/6 | Overs 66 | Batting: Vernon Philander 5(15) Temba Bavuma 32(68): Both Bavuma and Philander have played well so far to keep the high on energy Bangladesh bowlers at bay. Mohammad Shahid was been brilliant too without much success. He has bowled seven maidens in a row now.
Live cricket score: South Africa 173/6 | Overs 60 | Batting: Vernon Philander 0(2) Temba Bavuma 24(45): OUT! Huge wicket as Hashim Amla departs, handing Mustafizur Rahman his maiden Test wicket! It was a length ball outside off, Amla went to cut it through the off side but gets caught behind. What a blow, Bangladesh are right on top! And another as Rahman traps Duminy first ball. The dream over continues for Rahman as he does not take the hat-trick but goes through de Kock to bowl him for a duck. What a period of play for Bangladesh!
OUT! Hashim Amla c Das b M Rahman 13(28)
OUT! JP Duminy lbw Mustafizur Rahman 0(1)
OUT! Quinton de Kock bowled Mustafizur Rahman 0(2)
Live cricket score: South Africa 169/3 | Overs 58 | Batting: Hashim Amla 13(27), Temba Bavuma 20(39): Mustafizur Rahman runs in after Tea to bowl to Hashim Amla, who is content on leaving the ball he does not need to play. Rahman is hit for a boundary to point but also gets a leading edge towards covers.
TEA – Session Bangladesh: A fabulous session for Bangladesh, they have come back in the game with twin strikes. They bowled 29 overs and gave just 61 runs in the session. They dried up the runs, bowled tight lines and were rewarded with wickets. A superb session for them, can they continue in the same vein? Or will Hashim Amla shepherd a stand to stage a comeback? Join us in a while for the final session of play.
Live cricket score: South Africa 165/3 | Overs 57 | Batting: Hashim Amla 9(21), Temba Bavuma 20(39): Both Temba Bavuma and Hashim Amla have seen through to the Tea break without losing any more wicket. Live cricket score: South Africa 138/3 | Overs 48 | Batting: Hashim Amla 0(1), Temba Bavuma 2(5): OUT! Game in bowling for Bangladesh and now they have another wicket! Shakib comes on and traps du Plessis right in front of the stumps with an arm ball. That is as plumb as it gets! Bangladesh are back in this and they will know if they get Hashim now, they will right on top, Temba Bavuma is the new man in.
OUT! Faf du Plessis lbw Shakib 48(122)
Live cricket score: South Africa 136/2 | Overs 47 | Batting: Hashim Amla 0(1), Faf du Plessis 48(121): The pressure works and Bangladesh have their second wicket. Dean Elgar looks to break free but manages to edge one behind. Litton Das grabs at it and almost drops it before pouching it on the second attempt. Big wicket, Hashim Amla now joins du Plessis.
OUT! Dean Elgar c Das b T Islam 47(111)
Live cricket score: South Africa 130/1 | Overs 42 | Batting: Dean Elgar 30(67), Faf du Plessis 33(58): Both batsmen are nearing half-centuries but runs have deserted them for sometime now. Mustafizur Rahman has come back into the attack. Jubair is getting good purchase from the surface at Chittagong.
Live cricket score: South Africa 116/1 | Overs 36 | Batting: Dean Elgar 44(96), Faf du Plessis 45(107): A good period of play for the home side as both Mohammad Shahid and Jubair Hossain have bowled superbly. They have bowled tight lines and not allowed the South African to run away with the game. The batsmen are starting to feel the pressure despite having put up a 50-run stand already. Shahid has beaten the bat of du Plessis often in the last few overs.
Live cricket score: South Africa 104/1 | Overs 29 | Batting: Dean Elgar 30(67), Faf du Plessis 33(58): Play underway post lunch on Day One here! Faf du Plessis and Dean Elgar will wish to continue their good work so far. Bangladesh will be looking for wickets to get back in the game. Let’s see how things progress in this session for the home side. Jubair Hossain comes on to bowl, right away after lunch who starts with a maiden!
LUNCH – Session South Africa: A fantastic session for South Africa, they won the toss, elected to bat and have got to a good start. The only wicket they lost was of Stiaan van Zyl and will be happy with the way Dean Elgar and Faf du Plessis have batted after it. Bangladesh will want to take wickets after the break to keep the visitors in check. The deck has not offered much to them and it remains to be seen how bowlers from both teams go about their work on this surface. Do join us in a while for the second session of play.
Live cricket score: South Africa 104/1 | Overs 28 | Batting: Dean Elgar 30(61), Faf du Plessis 33(58): Rahman bowled a good spell heading into the lunch break but the pair of Faf du Plessis and Dean Elgar did not budge. There was a third umpire referral when du Plessis jabbed one down on the ground but the umpires wanted to look for it. It ensured that it was the last over before the lunch break. South Africa have had a good one, they are already touched the 100-run mark.
Live cricket score: South Africa 87/1 | Overs 25 | Batting: Dean Elgar 27(56), Faf du Plessis 19(45): Some quiet overs at last as South Africa look to get through to lunch without losing any more wickets. Taijul Islam and Mustafizur Rahman are bowling in tandom. Elgar did look in a bit of trouble against Rahman, having not seen enough of him in the recent time.
Live cricket score: South Africa 82/1 | Overs 20 | Batting: Dean Elgar 26(43), Faf du Plessis 15(28): Faf du Plessis has come in and got going without much fuss. He has looked positive and so has Dean Elgar. du Plessis welcomes Taijul Islam into the attack with a nicely timed loft for a maximum. M Shahid has been brought back into the attack.
Live cricket score: South Africa 58/1 | Overs 14 | Batting: Dean Elgar 17(33), Faf du Plessis 0(2): And just like that, against the run of play, Bangladesh have a wicket as Mahmudullah gets Stiaan van Zyl caught down the leg side by Litton Das. That was an arm ball, sliding down leg, van Zyl looked to turn it around for a run but got an edge and was well taken by Das. A wicket at last for Bangladesh! Faf du Plessis is the new man in.
OUT! Stiaan van Zyl c Das b Mahmdullah 34(49)
Live cricket score: South Africa 49/0 | Overs 12 | Batting: Dean Elgar 16(30), Stiaan van Zyl 29(42): Shakib Al Hasan has already come onto bowl for Bangladesh. Both the openers have done a good job of seeing off the new ball. Rahman has started to bowl his cutters and trying to get something out of the surface. Mahmudullah comes on as well. Not a good sign for Bangladesh as the runs continue to flow.
Live cricket score: South Africa 32/0 | Overs 7 | Batting: Dean Elgar 10(19), Stiaan van Zyl 18(23): The runs are coming freely for South Africa as the home side is looking for quick wickets. There is some swing on offer and Bangladesh will know they will need to strike at regular intervals to keep this South African line-up quiet. There was a loud appeal for leg-before against van Zyl but the ball seemed to be sliding down the leg side.
Live cricket score: South Africa 9/0 | Overs 1 | Batting: Dean Elgar 1(1), Stiaan van Zyl 8(5): Dean Elgar and Stiaan van Zyl are out to bat for South Africa. Mohammad Shahid runs in to bowl the first over. Runs rightaway for both of them. Elgar gets off the mark with a nice drive for a single. van Zyl cracks one through covers for a boundary to get going and then ends the over with another hit to the fine leg fence. Good start for South Africa!
Toss – South Africa have won the toss and elected to bat first! It is bright and sunny at Chittagong. There is rain predicted but this is a good toss to win for South Africa. They will be buoyed by the return of Dale Steyn. Bangladesh have picked Mustafizur Rahman in the side. Will be interesting how he goes today.
