Michael Clarke has been dismissed for 128. He tried to sweep Karn and was caught at square-leg. Only off the previous ball, Smith was dropped by Ishant in the deep. And they are going off! It is very dark and they are leaving. Smith walks off to applause. The innings has not been declared yet.
OUT! M Clarke 128 (163)
Australia get their five hundred. As Steven Smith was walking across the pitch, Ishant tried to follow him, but went too wide. It went down the leg-side for a four. Karn Sharma then comes from round the wicket and he has been hit over mid-wicket for a four by Clarke. Clarke then plays one down the ground. Smith then reverse sweeps for a single.
Smith has moved to his 150. It has been a magnificent innings. While there has been an attacking intent in this passage, there haven’t been too many big shots.
Karn Sharma resumes after the rain break. The batsmen take singles to start with. Five runs off the over.

We will have play in some time.

And they are going off again! Steven Smith had taken on Mohammed Shami and picked a few boundaries. The umpires have called for the covers again and they are going off.
Smith had smacked one back to Aaron, who had to get out of the way. That went at some rate. Australia are showing more attacking intent now. Aaron comes back on and he has been lofted through the leg-side off the first two balls to get fours. Smith is batting very well and is seeing the ball like a football. Smith then smashes one over Aaron’s head for another four.

Murali Vijay completed his over after the players got back onto the field. This will be an extended session. Varun Aaron is back into the attack with Clarke facing on 98. All focus on him. Aaron comes from around the wicket and bowls short. Clarke lets it go through. He follows it up with another short one, which is well left by Clarke. The third one is also short and he gets a single this time. Smith takes a single in the deep. Clarke gets solidly behind it. He then gets a single, it is a special hundred! He raises his bat and gets the bat up. He has tears in his eyes as he raises his bat. This is for Phil Hughes!

Play will start in a while. Cricket Australia informed that there will be no tea break.

There is a word that the covers are coming off at the Adelaide Oval.

Murali Vijay comes into the attack. Varun Aaron was set to take over, but he had to go back to his fielding spot. Smith takes a single to hand it to Clarke. Clarke then goes to 98 by playing it to mid-wicket. Smith plays out a dot. And rain stops play again. Clarke is on 98 this time.
Karn Sharma continues and Clarke gets a single off the first ball. They move to 408 and there is applause from the crowd. Remember, 408 was Phil Hughes’ Test cap number. Smith then takes a single. Clarke then goes down the ground and smashes it for a four. He then edges one to third-man and gets three. He finishes the over with a cut for four and moves to 97.
Steven Smith has got his ton! He places it to the leg-side and gets two. He shares an emotional moment with Michael Clarke.

The rain has come down again!

Play had been delayed and early lunch was taken. But play is scheduled to start in about 12 minutes.

Smith has moved to 98. He has hit Aaron for a four through the off-side. You cannot give Smith that room outside the off-stump. However, there is a break in play as there is a drizzle. The covers have come on.
Steven Smith has moved into the 90s. He got a four through the leg-side and meanwhile Aaron has got his ton. The umpires almost went off the field as they called for the covers. It isn’t raining but is overcast. They stayed on as the players had a word with the umpires. Clarke has played another cut over the off-side. He leaned back and carted it with minimal footwork.
Michael Clarke is not looking very good but things are getting better for him. Whenever India have pitched short, he has been able to pull it well. Karn Sharma had come into the attack for a while. India have now introduced Varun Aaron.
Ishant Sharma had started off with one with width and was dispatched for a four by Steven Smith. That was a gift for him to begin with. While the bowlers have maintained right channels on most occasions, the bad balls have been put away. As a result, Australia have started very well. Smith has now moved into the 80s.
Michael Clarke is out there with Steven Smith and will take on Mohammed Shami to start with. He gets behind a few deliveries solidly and then plays and misses. The first over is done, actually it continued from yesterday.

Big news: Michael Clarke has walked out to bat as the teams make their way to the middle.

There was a drizzle at the Adelaide Oval, hence there is a delayed start to day’s play.

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s coverage of Day 2 of the first Test match between Australia and India at Adelaide. I am Nishad Pai Vaidya and I will be bringing you the live updates of the match.

David Warner set the stage alight on Day One of the first Test between Australia and India at the Adelaide Oval. Warner smashed an aggressive 145 to put Australia in a good position and pay tribute to Phillip Hughes. Through the day, there were many emotional gestures from the Australian batsmen, as the piled the milestones. Finishing the day on 354/6,one would say that India hit back though Australia dominated major parts of the day.

The day began with 63 claps in honour of Hughes and the national anthems. Warner was in a hurry when play began. He smashed his first ball for a four through cover and had hit three by the time he had faced his first over. The Indian pacers began by attacking the Aussie batsmen from round the wicket. It was a move that backfired as Warner milked runs through the off-side. In the first four overs, Warner had raced to 35 of 17 balls.

Warner looked up to the heavens when he reached 50 and then had another glance when he was on 63 not out. In the second session, he moved to his century, leapt in his trademark manner and glanced at the heavens again. Michael Clarke walked up to him and the two batsmen had a long embrace in the middle.

Meanwhile, India’s bowlers continued to struggle. Karn Sharma, the debutant leg-spinner, was taken for runs, but had one good spell in the middle. He had dismissed Warner for 145 when he holed out to the deep. Murali Vijay had to bowl an extended spell of off-spin as India were struggling with their over-rate.

Brief scores:

Australia 354 for 6 (David Warner 145, Michael Clarke 60 retd. hurt, Steven Smith 72*; Varun Aaron 2 for 95, Mohammed Shami 2 for 83) vs India.
