Hobart Hurricanes endured their first loss in six matches in the Big Bash League 2018-19, losing to Melbourne Renegades at the Docklands Stadium, Melbourne on Monday.

After being out in to bat Hobart were dented early with departures of in-form Matthew Wade and Alex Doolan in Kane Richardson’s one over. Usman Shenwari then added the third for Melbourne with the wicket of D’Arcy Short with a well-directed short one.

Hobart slumped to 11/3 before George Bailey and Ben McDermott put on a 102-run stand for the fourth wicket. McDermott scored 50 off 43 balls before perishing to Jack Wildermuth in the 18th over.

Simon Milenko made 13 off nine balls before falling to Richardson. Bailey remained unbeaten on 70 off 53 balls taking Hobart’s score to 145/5.

In reply, Riley Meredith got the wicket of opener McKenzie Harvey for seven in the third over. Returning captain Melbourne captain Aaron Finch and young wicketkeeper batsman Sam Harper then out on 64 runs for the second wicket in quick time. Harper was removed by Clive Rose while Johan Botha added the scalp of Tom Cooper for 14. Finch was run out by Botha after scoring a slow 42 off 39 balls, before Mohammad Nabi and Dan Christian saw their team through.

Nabi remained unbeaten on 26 off 22 balls while Christian blasted 25 off 13 balls as Melbourne won their third game of the season with six wickets in hand and four balls to spare.
