Rajshahi Kings claimed their second win of the Bangladesh Premier League 2019 with a tense five-run win over defending champions Rangpur Riders, riding on Bangladesh international Mustafizur Rahman’s superb final over in which he defend nine runs giving way just three and wicketkeeper batsman Zakir Hasan’s 36-ball 42 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka on Sunday.

Opting to bowl first Rangpur had a good start with the ball when skipper Mashrafe Mortaza send back rival captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz for a first-ball duck. Mominul Haque departed soon to Sohag Gazi for 14 followed by the wicket of Soumya Sarkar for 18 by Motraza.

From 36/3, Rajshahi were buoyed by a 54-run stand between Mohammad Hafeez and Hasan. Hafeez was run-out for 26 by Ravi Bopara for 26. Rajshahi went on to lose two two more quick wickets in the form of Laurie Evans (2) and Ryan ten Doeshcate (14), but Hasan’s unbeaten knock pushed the team’s total to 135/8.

In reply, Rangpur lost Mortaza – who opened the innings – for a two-ball duck taken by Karmrul Islam Rabbi, before Chris Gayle got off to a good start. Gayle scored 23 off 14 taking Rangpur to 31 in three overs before Rabbi send back the big West Indian.

Mohammad Mithun and Rilee Rossouw then forged a 40-run stand to get Rangpur back in the chase. Mithun though departed to Hafeez after scoring 30 off 31 balls, followed by the wicket of Bopara for two by Hafeez, Benny Howell was run-out for 4 while Nahidul Islam got out in the final delivery off the 19th over bowled by Isuru Udana.

With nine need off the final over, Mustafizur gave away a single to Rossouw and followed it up with three dot balls for Ferhad Reza. A leg bye for a single off the fifth ball meant Rossouw had to hit a six to tie the game – but he managed just a single and remained unbeaten on 44 off 45 balls.
