Global T20 Canada 2019: Yuvraj, Manpreet star in Toronto Nationals first win

Captain Yuvraj Singh and Manpreet Gony starred in a high-scoring encounter as Toronto Nationals recorded their first win of the ongoing Global T20 Canada 2019, beating Edmonton Royals by two wickets.

Toronto chased down 192 in 17.5 overs thanks to Heinrich Klaasen (45 off 39), Yuvraj (35 off 21) and a quickfire 33 off 12 from Gony at CAA Centre in Ontario on Saturday.

Toronto were given early blows after losing both their openers Rodrigo Thomas (8) and Calum McLeod (0) inside four overs. The pair of Klaasen and Yuvraj repaired the damage, adding 56 runs for the third wicket. The partnership was dominated by a flowing Yuvraj who struck three fours and as many sixes before becoming Ben Cutting’s lone victim of the match.

Yuvraj’s dismissal triggered a collapse with Toronto losing four wickets for the addition of just 40 runs. At 125/7, Gony kickstarted a comeback with a blistering innings that saw him hit three fours and three sixes but Shadab Khan ended the fireworks in the 17th over raising Edmonton’s hopes. The pair of Mark Montfort and Salman Nazar held their nerves to see their team over the line.

Earlier, Jeremy Gordon gave Toronto an early success with the dismissal of opener Richie Berrington for 5 after Yuvraj opted to field. But Faf du Plessis (28) and Navneet Dhaliwal (20) ensured a quick recovery taking the score to 50/1 in the Powerplay overs.

Mohammed Hafeez and James Neesham got the starts but Chris Green (3/33) ended their hopes. Cutting (43 off 24) and Shadab (36 off 17) led the surge to propel their team to a big 191/6.
