Shai Hope produced yet another resolute innings compiling 95 of 113 balls and aided by Jason Holder s 32 and Ashley Nurse s 40 took West Indies to 283/9 in the 3rd ODI of the five-match series at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune on Saturday.

After Virat Kohli won the toss for the third straight time, he opted to bowl first, handing returning Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar the first crack at the two-paced track. And the duo returned the favour with Bhuvneshwar bowling a tidy first spell of four overs giving away just 16 runs, while Bumrah sent back both the openers inside the first ten overs.

Hope, continuing from his 123 not out from the tied second ODI, held the innings together despite the third straight failure of experienced Marlon Samuels. Shimron Hetmyer, who had made a 64-ball 94 at Vizag, started well but was soon picked up by Kuldeep Yadav.

Skipper Holder stuck around for a brief while, but regular strikes meant India kept themselves ahead before Nurse s assault took a little bit of shine off India s bowling performance.

Bumrah, who came in place of Mohammad Shami, made early impact when he had opener Chandrapaul Hemraj cramped for room off a short pitch delivery. The subsequent top edge was well taken by MS Dhoni, who was dropped for the T20I series a day earlier, as the former skipper sprinted at full tilt towards short fine leg before completing a full length diving catch.

Kieran Powell threatened to cut loose hitting a six and two fours but he was well caught in the slips by Rohit Sharma off Bumrah for 21.

Samuels who had earlier overturned an LBW decision off Bumrah, fell to youngster Khaleel Ahmed when he gloved one to Dhoni and departed for 9. Samuels had made 0 and 13 in the first two matches.

Hope was then joined by Hetmyer and the duo steadied the innings with Hetmyer donning the aggressor s role racing to 37 off just 21 balls with the help of three sixes and two fours. But, the U-19 World Cup winning captain was undone by Kuldeep and was stumped by Dhoni in the 20th over.

Three overs later, Kuldeep struck again removing Rovman Powell as Rohit completed his second catch at slips. West Indies slipped to 121/5. Holder then combined with Hope for a stand of 76 runs for the sixth wicket. Holder fell to Bhuvneshwar, holed out at long-off, by substitute fielder Ravindra Jadeja. India dented WI s progress with two more quick wickets in the form of debutant Fabian Allen (5) – picked by Yuzvendra Chahal – and Hope – cleaned up by Bumrah – in a span of three overs.

However, Nurse s belligerent 22-ball 40 run-knock consisting four fours and two sixes pushed West Indies total to a competitive 283/9.

For India, Bhuvneshwar had a rather forgettable comeback conceding 70 runs in his 10 overs taking one wicket while Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers returning figures of 10-1-35-4. Kuldeep claimed 2/52.

Brief Scores: 283/9 (Shai Hope 95, Ashley Nurse 40; Jasprit Bumrah 4/35) vs India
