Sri Lanka removed Ross Taylor without a run added to his overnight 50 courtesy a stunning catch, but that was to be the only success they found on the third morning of the Wellington Test as New Zealand moved to 403/3 by lunch on Monday.

Tom Latham extended his vigil to an unbeaten 168 – just ten nine runs from his career-best 177 – and with him was New Zealand’s man for a crisis, Henry Nicholls, on 45. New Zealand lead by 121 runs.

From an overnight 311/2 in 84 overs, New Zealand lost Raylor for the addition of a single to their total. Taylor flicked Lahiru Kumara firmly and found Dimuth Karunaratne stationed at short leg who intercepted the shot exceptionally. As far as reflex catches go, this one was right up there with the best.

Enter Nicholls, who continued his resolute batting from the UAE and helped Latham put on 91 in 29.2 overs. Latham, 121 overnight, batted with ease and discipline. He crossed 150 in the 100th over and at lunch is 168 from 352 balls.

Lunch: New Zealand 403/3 (Latham 168*, Taylor 50, Nicholls 45*) lead Sri Lanka 282 by 121 runs
