Ranji Trophy 2018-19: Akshath Reddy’s 248* stifles TN as Hyderabad bat two days

Hyderabad’s intentions were clear on day two of their Elite Group B match of the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy at Tirunelveli – to bat Tamil Nadu out of the contest.

From an overnight 249/3, Hyderabad ground their way to 523/7 by the close of Tuesday’s play, with skipper Akshath Reddy not out on 248 from 477 balls. This was Reddy’s first double-century in first-class cricket, surpassing his previous best of 196. The 27-year-old added 134 runs to his overnight 114, while Bavanaka Sandeep moved from 90 to 130 before he was the fourth wicket to fall.

After Sandeep’s exit, Hyderabad briefly wobbled with the loss of two batsmen but PS Sairam with 42 off 123 balls took a leaf out of Reddy’s book and resisted nearly to stumps. Reddy’s unbeaten double has so far encompassed 22 fours and three sixes.

For Tamil Nadu, the slow left-arm spinner Rahil Shah has bowled the most overs (43) followed by Varun Chakravarthi (38). Hyderabad sit at the bottom of Group B, with TN at fourth place.

Brief scores: Hyderabad 523/7 (Reddy 248*, Sandeep 130) vs Tamil Nadu
