After failures from top-order batsmen Jiwanjot Singh (4) and in-form Anmolpreet Singh (0), Punjab were revived by young sensation Shubman Gill, who opened the innings, and skipper Mandeep Singh (68) as the duo added 92 runs for the third wicket against Andhra.

Opening bowler Bandaru Ayyappa scalped Mandeep for his third wicket of the day after Paidikalva Vijaykumar had removed Gill and Karn Sharma had accounted for Gurkeerat Singh (41), to leave Punjab in a spot of bother at 186/5.

However, debutant Sanvir Singh held the Punjab innings together and with the tail and  guided his team to 261/6. Sanvir was unbeaten on 63* when stumps were drawn on day one.

At Nadaun, Bengal were buoyed by good starts from the top-order but they failed to convert their starts as the team finished at a healthy 266/6 on day one against Himachal Pradesh

Openers Abhishek Raman and Abhimanyu Eswaran added 64 runs for the opening wicket before Rishi Dhawan removed Eswaran (21). Experienced Sudip Chatterjee then combined with Raman for a stand of 64 before Raman was sent packing by Pankaj Jaiswal.

Chatterjee’s wicket soon after left Bengal at 151/3 but skipper Manoj Tiwary and Anstrup Majumdar got Bengal back on track scoring 73 runs for the fourth wicket.

But Himachal made a comeback late in the day claiming the wickets of Tiwary for 55 – by Prashant Chopra – and Majumdar for 52 – by Dhawan. Jaiswal added the wicket of Sreevats Goswami for 10 as Bengal finished with 266/6.

At Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala batsmen failed to convert their starts but fifties from Jalaj Saxena, Sanju Samson and skipper Sachin Baby took Kerala to 231/4 vs Hyderabad.

After being put in to bat, KB Arun Karthik and Saxena put on 59 runs for the first wicket before Ravi Teja got rid of Arun Karthik.

Spinner Mehdi Hassan then send back experienced Rohan Prem 29 after Prem and Saxena added 51 runs for the second wicket. Saxena fell soon after to Hassan for 57. But, Samson and Baby then forged a stand of 90 runs for the fourth wicket.

Samson fell to Palakodeti Sairam in the 79th over for 53. Baby and Vasudevan Jagadeesh then saw through the day unscathed.

Son of billionaire-industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, Aryaman scored his maiden first-class fifty in the opening day of the Ranji Trophy 2018-19 season for Madhya Pradesh against Tamil Nadu. Aryaman’s 166-ball knock consisted six boundaries and he combined for a stand of 124 runs with Rajat Patidar for the second wicket, after MP had lost opener Ankit Dane for four to M Mohammad.

R Ashwin remained wicketless in the first session but plucked Aryaman for his first and only wicket in the day. Veteran Naman Ojha got together with Patidar for a stand of 77 runs for the third wicket before falling for 45 off 92 balls to Vijay Shankar.

Patidar notched up his hundred and remained unbeaten on 110 off 254 balls with MP reaching 214/3.
