Ranji Trophy 2018-19, Elite Group C roundup: Shivam Mavi makes a splash, Chetan Bist leads Rajasthan

A round-up of the Elite Group C matches on day one of the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy.

At the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, hosts Uttar Pradesh took the day’s honours after bowling out Goa  for 152 and then by stumps wiping out that total at 153/1.

For UP, the bowling hero was Under-19 World Cup winner Shivam Mavi with 4/25 on first-class debut, his strikes running through Goa’s lower middle order and tail as their innings gave away from 66/5 to 115/8. Darshan Misal made 43 to get the score to 152 before he was last out in the 36th over. The only other Goa batsman to cross 19 was skipper Sagun Kamat with 41. Ankit Rajpoot and Yash Dayal took two wickets each to add to Goa’s shaky start and Saurabh Kumar also chipped in with a couple of wickets.

Madhav Kaushik was 83 not out at stumps, paired with Mohammad Saif who was batting on 54 with UP leading by one run.

Uttar Pradesh 153/1 (Kaushik 83*, Saif 54*) lead Goa 152 (Misal 43, Kamat 41, Mavi 4/25) by one run

At the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Chetan Bist led Rajasthan to 300/3 on day one with an career-best unbeaten 146, carrying the team while his batting partners all made starts without converting. AV Gautam (25), skipper Mahipal Lomror (24) and Robin Bist (39) were cut off but Chetan Bist ploughed on and with former Rajasthan captain Ashok Menaria (45*) put the team in a spot from where they can press for a big total against Jammu & Kashmir.

Brief scores: Rajasthan 300/3 (Chetan Bist 146*) vs Jammu & Kashmir

In Agartala, Bishal Ghosh scored his third first-class hundred, a career-best 151 not out, to steer Tripura to 268/7 by stumps against Services. With Smit Patel (38) and Harmeet Singh (37) the next best contributors, the extent of Ghosh’s excellent innings cannot be undervalued. For Services, Sachidanand Pandey (3/77), Diwesh Pathania (2/56) and Vikas Yadav (2/80) were the wicket-takers.

Brief scores: Tripura 268/7 (Bishal Ghosh 151*) vs Services

A mixed day for Odisha and Haryana in Bhubaneshwar. The wickets were shared by Haryana’s attack  – missing Amit Mishra – and only Odisha opener Anurag Sarangi with 114 crossed 30 as the hosts ended day one at 230/6. The lack of big scores would have easily seen Odisha bowled out on another day, if not for Sarangi’s maiden first-class hundred in his 18th match.

Brief scores: Odisha 230/6 (Sarangi 114) vs Haryana

Honours were pretty much even in Ranchi, where hosts Jharkhand ended the day on 266/6 against Assam. Jharkhand’s top three each made starts but only Utkarsh Singh, with 63 not out, has the option of pressing on for a hundred. Kumar Deobrat (43) and Mohammad Nazim (72) put on 108 for the opening wicket before Assam’s bowlers rocked the middle order.

Brief scores: Jharkhand 266/6 (Nazim 72, Utkarsh 63*) vs Assam
