Ranji Trophy 2018-19, Group A: Jadeja career-best gives Saurashtra commendable lead over Karnataka

Left-arm spinner Dharmendrasinh Jadeja produced career-best figures to bowl out Karnataka for 217 after Saurashtra had managed 316 in their first innings of their Group A fixture of the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. Jadeja finished with 7 for 107, besting his previous best of 6 for 51 to give Saurashtra a first-innings lead of 99.

Resuming the day on 288 for 9, Karnataka’s last-wicket pair of Kamlesh Makvana and Yuvraj Chudasama added a further 28 runs before Jagadeesha Suchith picked up his sixth to finish with 6 for 111.

For Karnataka, barring half-centuries from opener Dega Nischal and Karun Nair, there was no significant contribution. Jadeja had Karnataka in trouble early, removing Ravikumar Samarth and Devdutt Padikkal to leave them at 25 for 2. A fourth wicket partnership between Nair and Nischal worth 96 runs brought Karnataka some respite, with the Indian triple-centurion producing an attractive 83-ball innings comprising 11 boundaries. Nischal on the other hand batted with patience for his 179-ball innings, which included three boundaries and a six.

However, once the stand was broken, Jadeja picked up the pieces. Pavan Deshpande and Shreyas Gopal tried to lift the innings, but Jadeja ran roughshod over the opponents. He cleaned up Deshpande for his fifth wicket and struck two balls later to remove BR Sharath. Although he did concede over 100 runs, he always kept Saurashtra with a chance of attaining a strong lead, which is exactly what transpired. Makvna picked up two for 58 while Yuvraj removed Abhimanyu Mithun for his only wicket.

Brief Score: Karnataka 217 all out (Karun Nair 63, Dega Nischal 58; Dharmendrasinh Jadeja 7 for 103) trail Saurashtra 316 all out by 99 runs.
