India international Shreyas Iyer tore into Sikkim’s bowling unit, ransacking 147 runs in just 55 balls, with the help of 15 sixes and seven fours, as Mumbai registered a massive 154-run win in Round 1 of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Group C match at the Emerald High School Ground, Indore on Thursday.

Iyer’s whirlwind hundred beat the previous highest by an Indian batsman in T20s, an unbeaten 128 scored by Rishabh Pant for Delhi Daredevils in the 2018 IPL. His 147 stands as the seventh-highest individual score in all T20 cricket.

Buoyed by Iyer’s hundred, during which he took 35 off one over from Sikkim pacer Tashi Bhalla, Mumbai ended on 258/4.

While big guns – skipper Ajinkya Rahane (11) and Prithvi Shaw (10) – missed out, falling yo Ishwar Chowdhary and Bipul Sharma, respectively, Iyer combined with Suryakumar Yadav (63 off 33 balls) for a huge stand of 213 runs in just 15 overs. Milind Kumar removed both the well-set batsman as Siddesh Lad (6*) and Aditya Tare (13) pushed Mumbai total past the 250-run mark.

In reply, Sikkim could only manage 104/7 in their 20 overs with Bipul Sharma top-scoring with 32 while Ashish Thapa made an unbeaten 19. Milind Kumar, who scored over 1000 runs in the Ranji Trophy 2018-19, was dismissed for 1 by Shubham Ranjane. For Mumbai, Shams Mulani picked 2/2 in his three overs while Shardul Thakur returned 2/13 in his four overs. Dhawal Kulkarni, Tushar Deshpande and Ranjane claimed one wicket each.

Brief Scores: Mumbai 258/4 (Shreyas Iyer 147, Suryakumar Yadav 63; Milind Kumar 2/30) beat Sikkim 104/7 (Bipul Sharma 32; Shams Mulani 2/2) by 154 runs
