Debutants Puducherry upset Hyderabad by three runs in the first match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019, Round 1 in Group E at the Palam B Stadium, New Delhi on Thursday. Puducherry rode on outstation player Paras Dogra’s 48-ball 89 to post 159/6 in the 20 overs, before Parandaman Thamaraikannan claimed 4/39 helping Puducherry restrict Hyderabad to 156/9.

From a winning position of 95/2 in under 11 overs, Hyderabad’s batting imploded as they lost their next seven wickets for just 60 runs.

After being put in to bat, Puducherry lost opener S Karthik for nine to Mohammed Siraj, followed by the wicket of Thalaivan Sargunam for eight to left-arm spinner Mehdi Hassan.

Skipper Damodaren Rohit and Dogra then revived Puducherry’s innings with a stand of 32 runs for the third wicket before Rohit departed for 27 to Hasasn.

Puducherry slumped further losing two more wickets in the form of Fabid Ahmed (5) and Vikneshwaran Marimuthu (11). Dogra then stepped up and with Thamaraikannan (7*) added 50 runs for the sixth wicket to push Puducherry total past the 150-run mark.

For Hyderabad, Siraj and Hassan took two wickets each while Chama Milind claimed one.

In reply, Tanmay Agarwal and Akshath Reddy hammered 66 runs for the opening wicket  in 6.4 overs before Agarwal was removed by former Kerala pacer Fabid Ahmed for 31. Thamaraikannan then removed K Rohit Rayudu for 10, but the big wicket of skipper Ambati Rayudu was taken by Akshay Jain for 6, that triggered the Hyderabad collapse.

Only Bavanaka Sandeep managed to support Reddy with a 17-ball 21 before falling to Ahmed. Thamaraikannan then polished off the lower-middle order claiming three quick wickets to finish with 4/39 in his four overs ,while Ahmed picked 2/23 in his four overs. Reddy remained unbeaten on 69 off 51 balls.
