Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019, Group E, Round 3: Services overcome Maharashtra

Services produced a clinical performance at the Palam Stadium in New Delhi and beat Maharashtra by six wickets on Sunday in a Round 3 match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Chasing a modest 116 to win, Services chased down the total in the final over overcoming a defiant bowling display by Maharashtra and bagged four important points.

Sachidanand Pandey and Mohit Kumar were the two standout performers with the ball for Services sharing seven wickets between themselves. Despite Ruturaj Gaikwad, the rest of Maharashtra’s top order got starts but couldn’t capitalise. Yash Nayar, Naushad Shaikh and captain Rahul Tripathi began well but Maharashtra kept losing wickets.

Only Ankit Bawne resisted and top scored with 24 with two boundaries and one six. Arjun Sharma chipped in with a couple of lower order wickets and kept Maharashtra to inside 120.

Wicketkeeper Nakul Harpal Verma was the first Services wicket to fall in their chase. His opening partner Ravi Chauhan took the more sensible approach and opted to play through the innings. Gahlaut Rahul Singh, Vikas Hathwala and skipper Rajat Paliwal started off positively but none could go past 20. With regular strikes, Maharashtra were threatening to defend the small target, but Mohit Ahlawat and Chauhan saw the team through with four balls to spare.

Brief Score: Services 119 for 4 (Ravi Chauhan, Rajat Paliwal 20; Satyajeet Bachhav 2/17) beat Maharashtra 116 for 9 (Ankit Bawne 34, Rahul Tripathi 20; Sachidanand Pandey 3/21) by six wickets.
