Left-arm spinner Pappu Roy claimed 4/21 in his four overs, helping Odisha restrict Assam to 142/9, before the batsmen led by the experienced Biplab Samantray (49) handed Odisha a seven-wicket win in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019 Group D match of the Round 5 at the DRIEMS Ground, Tangi, Cuttack on Wednesday.

This was Odisha s third win in five matches while Assam endured their second defeat in five matches.

After being out in to bat, Assam lost opener Pallavkumar Das to a run out for eight in the second over before Debabrata Pradhan removed Swarupam Purkayastha for 12. Riyan Parag fell to Suryakant Pradhan for 13 while skipper Amit Sinha was scalped by Samantray for one. Only Shibsankar Roy managed to put in some kind of resistance up the order, scoring 47 off 32 before was sent back by Prayash Singh. Roy then cleaned up the tail claiming the last four wickets to fall even as Jitumoni Kalita s 20-ball unbeaten 31-run knock helped Assam to 142/9.

In reply, Sandeep Pattnaik and Rajesh Dhuper got together for a stand of 46 runs in just 4.5 overs to provide Odisha a good start in the chase. Dhuper fell to Abu Nechim for 27 off 18 balls while Pattnaik was removed by Rajjakuddin Ahmed for 21.

Skipper Anurag Sarangi and Biplab Samantray then put on a big stand of 80 runs for the third wicket to take Odisha close to the target. Samantray was out for 49 off Abu Nechi. but Sarangi took his team home with an unbeaten 43.
