Ambidextrous bowler Akshay Karnewar bowled a sensational spell of 3.5-0-7-4 to help Vidarbha trump Rajasthan in a low-scoring affair in the Group B match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019 at the CB Patel International Cricket Stadium, Surat in Monday. Karnewar’s effort overshadowed another brilliant performance with the ball for Rajasthan by India international Khaleel Ahmed, who picked 5/18 in just 2.5 overs as Vidarbha were bundled out for 117, after opting to bat first. But Rajasthan batsmen failed to build on the good work done by Khaleel and co., as they were shot down for 73, thus enduring their second loss of the campaign. Only opener Manender Singh (22) and one down Robin Bist managed to (22) to reach the double-figure mark as Rajasthan lost their last nine wickets for just 26 runs. After Darshan Nalkande had removed opener Aditya Garhwal for one in the second over, Bist and Manender added 46 runs for the second wicket, before Manendar was sent back by Karnewar. That triggered the collapse with skipper Mahipal lomror run out for for two, fours runs later. Wicketkeeper batsman Chetan Bist was removed by Atharva Taide for 5, while Robin was sent packing by Ravi Jangid. Deepak Chahar become Taide’s second victim after scoring one while Karnewar polished off the tail scalping Ravi Bishnoi (5), Rahul Chahar (5) and Khaleel (0) to hand his team a 44-run win.

Earlier, Vidarbha struggled to cope with the pace of Khaleel who had both the openers back in the hut in his first two overs. Taide made 23 while Apoorv Wankhade could only manage one. Jitesh Sharma played a valiant knock of 49 off 29 balls even as wickets kept falling at the other end.

Skipper Faiz Fazal made just seven before falling to Nathu Singh while Ganesh Satish was trapped in front by Bishnoi for three. Jangid made 13 before falling to Tajinder Singh. But Khaleel wrapped up the Vidarbha innings claiming three wickets in his third over.

Brief Scores: Vidarbha 117 (Jitesh Sharma 49; Khaleel Ahmed 5/18) beat Rajasthan 73 (Manender Singh 24; Akshay Karnewar 4/7) by 44 runs.
