Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Super League Group B

Delhi suffered their second straight defeat in the Super League stage of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019 with Mumbai bouncing back with an eight-wicket win on Saturday.

Mumbai had started the stage with a comprehensive defeat against Karnataka but have put their campaign back on track thanks to Tushar Deshpande (4/19) and captain Shreyas Iyer (53*) who played a starring role in the big win in Indore.

Mumbai opted to field and Shams Mulani tasted success as early as the fifth delivery of the match when he had Hiten Dala stumped for 4. Delhi recovered from the early blow through Unmukt Chand (22) and Dhruv Shorey (33) as the pair added 58 runs for the second wicket.

Deshpande then struck twice in consecutive deliveries to send back Chand and captain Nitish Rana (0) with Delhi’s score stationary on 63 in 9.4 overs. The dismissal of Shorey three runs later compounded their problems.

A brisk 23-ball 33 from Lalit Yadav and an unbeaten 5-ball 12 from Pawan Negi helped them to a decent 144/7 even as Deshpande added to more wickets to his kitty.

In their chase, Mumbai lost opener Prithvi Shaw (3) cheaply to Navdeep Saini. However, it was a one-way traffic from thereon with captain Iyer combining with Jay Bista with a 57-run stand for the second wicket.

Bista departed for 39 when he was bowled by Rana in the 12th over. Iyer, who struck five fours and a six, then found another partner in Suryakumar Yadav to guide Mumbai home.

Yadav struck three fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 26-ball 42 as Mumbai finished on 148/2 in 19 overs to claim two points.

Delhi, with their second defeat are languishing at the bottom of Group B now.
