VB Kanchi Veerans jumped to second spot in the points table with an impressive 58-run victory over Jones Tuti Patriots in the 15th match of the Tamil Nadu Premier League 2019. It was a combined effort from the Baba Aparajith-led side that saw Veerans outperform Patriots in all departments.

After being asked to bat first, Veerans lost the wicket of opener K Vishal Vaidhya in the second over. Skipper Aparajith and S Siddharth did not let Patriots take charge and played aggressively. Aparajith’s first run came in form of a boundary off Dakshinamoorthy Kumaran in the second over.

The duo put on 71 runs for the second wicket, with Siddharth scoring his first half-century of TNPL 2019. Aparajith continued his big-hitting and completed his half-century with a six, reaching the milestone off 37 deliveries.

Veerans could have finished with a score of around 160 but Rajagopal Sathish used all his IPL experience and smashed an unbeaten 47 off 19, that included four sixes and three fours. He started off cautiously but in no time jumped from off 6 balls to 29 off 11 after hitting Athisayaraj Davidson for three sixes and a four in the 18th over. The sudden surge saw Veerans cross the 160-run mark and they ended up on a big total of 193/3.

Patriots’ openers started off well, gathering 34 runs in less than three overs but the wicket of Murugesan Kamlesh (16 off 7) marked their downfall. Gowtham Thamarai forced a comeback for Veerans with the wickets of opener Akshay Srinivasan (22 off) and V Subramania Siva (3 off 6) in the seventh over.

The middle order crumbled to Veerans’ bowling attack and Patriots could just manage a score of 135/8 in their 20 overs. Thamari was the pick of the bowlers with three big scalps, although he went for 40 runs.

With this win, Veerans now sit at second position in the points table with three wins from four matches while Patriots are placed at the sixth spot, after losing their third tie.
