He was chosen in the opening slot after the comeback of Jonathan Trott did not work out for him or England. Noticed for his exploits for Yorkshire, he served as the 12th man in West Indies, where Trott had an indifferent run of three Tests. Lyth was chosen as the opener in the first Test of New Zealand’s tour of England in May. Although he scored 12 and 7 at Lord’s, he emerged with moderate numbers owing to his century in England’s loss at Headingley. READ: Ashes 2015: England selector defends struggling opener Adam Lyth

England have experimented with the opening slot alongside captain Alastair Cook for the last few years. Nick Compton was tried for a while, before newbie Joe Root was slotted in, and later, Michael Carbey was also given a series, the Ashes of 2013-14, to try to settle in. It remains to be seen if Lyth is persisted with for a longer time than his predecessors. LIVE CRICKET UPDATES: England vs Australia, 5th Test, The Oval, Day 3
