Edgbaston: India Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is all set to make his debut as India captain in Tests in the one-off Test match scheduled to be played at Edgbaston against England starting Friday, July 1 2022, according to a report in Indian Express.

This comes after regular captain Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday morning and is currently in isolation at the team hotel ahead of the Test.

Rohit, who was part of the 4-day warm-up fixture vs Leicestershire didn’t play any part after batting in the first innings and instead wicket-keeper batter Srikar Bharat opened the batting along with Shubman Gill.

The last occasion an Indian fast bowler led the side was Kapil Dev which was 35 years ago and Bumrah making his debut as India Test captain will mark the return of a fast bowler leading a side for India.

“If given an opportunity, it would be an honour. I don’t think any player would say no. There’s no bigger feeling than that,” Bumrah had said earlier when he became the vice-captain of the Indian team for the 3-match ODI series against South Africa.

“I don’t like to chase things because I don’t want to See I am a person who believes that God has a plan and everything will find out its own way, so I don’t like to hamper the plan that is there. I try to never change anything,” he had further added.

“Whatever role is asked of me I would do it with the best ability that I can. I don’t want to change the whole organisation, you are always a leader when you are a senior member of the team so it’s just a post that comes with you,” Bumrah concluded.
