Akshar Patel’s shines with bat and ball as Gujarat beat Railways by 4 wickets in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2015-16

Alur: Akshar Patel produced an all-round show to help Gujarat notch up a four-wicket win over Railways in their Vijay Hazare Trophy 2015-16 one-day match on Sunday.  Akshar scalped a crucial wicket during Railways’ innings of 259 for 5 and then top-scored with a 75 off 59 balls to help Gujarat chase down the target with two balls to spare and notch up their second consecutive win in the tournament. Put into bat, Railways scored 259 for 5 in their allotted 50 overs, riding on Arindam Ghosh’s unbeaten 96. The other notable contributor was Mahesh Rawat, who made 60, with Karn Sharma (26) and Ashish Yadav (22 not out) lending the finishing touches to the Railways innings. In their run chase, Gujarat lost Smit Patel for a duck, but captain Parthiv Patel (33) and Priyank Panchal (37) steadied the innings with a 64-run stand. But Railways fought back courtesy Karn, who dismissed both batsmen in quick succession to leave them in a hint of trouble at 79 for 3. That became 126 for 4 when Yadav dismissed Manprit Juneja to bring the match back on an even keel.

But Axar, who hit six fours and four sixes in his brilliant knock and Rujul Bhatt (72) put together 120 for the fifth wicket as Gujarat reached 260 for six in 49.4 overs. Gujarat bagged four points from the won while Railways got none. Gujarat have now won both  their matches in the tournament so far and will look to carry their form into the rest of the tournament as well.
