Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott steady England after early blow

Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott added 70 runs for the second wicket to steady England after they lost Andrew Strauss early on against South Africa in the first session of the first Test at Kennington Oval on Thursday.

Electing to bat first, England suffered a majoy blow as Morne Morkel struck in the very first over to remove Strauss for a duck, trapped in front of the wickets.

Cook and Trott batted cautiously to keep South Africa looking for the second breakthrough, adding 70 runs till lunch.

Cook struck three boundaries and a six off Dale Steyn to reach 33 off 77 balls, accompanied by Trott at 27 off 60 deliveries with the help of four boundaries.

England included pacer Tim Bresnan in their playing XI, ahead of Steven Finn.
