A well made 94 from Alex Hales meant England have a lead of 330 going into Tea against Sri Lanka on Day Four of the third Test at Lord’s. Earlier, rain played spoilsport as the first session was completely wiped out, without a ball being bowled. After green signal was given, England batsmen Hales and Steven Finn came at the crease with lead at 237. Finn was removed soon, which meant skipper Alastair Cook came to the middle. Both Cook and Hales played well before the latter was dismissed six runs short of his maiden Test century.  LIVE CRICKET SCORECARD  England vs Sri Lanka 2016, 3rd Test at Lord’s

England started of the session with Hales and Finn at the crease. But Finn’s stint as night watchman came to an end as Eranga caught him lbw for 7. The next to come in was skipper Alastair Cook, who was back from the blow he received on his knee yesterday. At the other end, Hales was lucky enough to stay at the crease after getting clean bowled, as umpire judged Eranga to have overstepped. The replays showed otherwise, as some part of the foot was behind the line.

Soon, Cook was to survive a scare, after he was adjudged lbw of Herath’s bowling. But having taken the review, replays showed the impact of ball outside line, which meant umpire’s call was overturned. After the brief period of Sri Lankan dominance, Hales decided to take charge, scoring a six and four of Herath’s consecutive deliveries to put pressure back onto the visitors.

Hales was going about his business, closing in on what would be a well-made century. But just like it has been with him in all the series, he was caught lbw of Mathews’ bowling on 94, again missing out on the maiden century. Moeen Ali came into the crease next, with the lead at 330.

Brief Scores: England 416 (Alastair Cook 85, Jonathan Bairstow 167; Suranga Lakmal 3 for 90, Rangana Herath 4 for 81 & 109 for 4 (Alex Hales 41*, Jonathan Bairstow 32; Shaminda Eranga 2 for 44, Nuwan Pradeep 3 for 37) lead Sri Lanka 288 (Dimuth Karunaratne 50, Kaushal Silva 79; Steven Finn 3 for 59, Chris Woakes 3 for 31) by 330 runs
