Australia spin great Shane Warne has heaped high praise on India legend Anil Kumble, calling him a ‘super competitor’ and a ‘gentleman’.

Kumble, a legspinner, is India’s most prolific Test wicket-taker with 619 wickets in the format and third overall. The all-time list is led by Sri Lankan wizard Muttiah Muralitharan with 800 wickets followed by Warne, who took 708 scalps during his storied international career.

“He (Kumble) was a super competitor, it was his brain, he thought about the game,” Warne said during an Instagram Live video. “Even though he is a gentleman, and he is quiet, he is a super competitor. He is hungry, love calling him a friend. Always did so well.”

Warne explains why Kumble was so successful in Test cricket even though he didn’t turn the ball much “For a guy who did not spin the ball a long way, one of the reasons why he got so many wickets is because he got bounce and because of his skill,” Warne said.

Kumble is also one of the only two Test cricketers to have taken all 10 wickets in a Test innings after England’s Jim Laker.

Warne also praised former India international Navjot Sidhu, calling him the best player of spin he saw during his career.

Sidhu, alongside, Kumble, found place in Warne’s greatest India XI.

“I had to pick Navjot Singh Sidhu because he was the best player against spin I have ever played against. All the other spinners I have played with, they have also told me that Sidhu was brilliant against them,” Warne said.
