Anil Kumble resigns as head coach of Team India

Anil Kumble stepped down as the head coach of Team India, after his successful one-year tenure. BCCI had not renewed his contract, starting hunt for new applicants. Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Lalchand Rajput among others featured in the list. An alleged rift between captain Virat Kohli and Kumble had already come to the fore. Kohli later told reporters that the matter was blown out of proportion and a few stories were made only for their own benefits. India will be without a coach for their limited-overs series against West Indies, starting Friday.

Mr. Amitabh Choudhary, Acting Secretary of the BCCI, told bcci.tv, “We wish to place on record our sincere appreciation for the immense contribution by Anil Kumble to the team which enabled India to attain the No.1 Test position. Indian cricket needs his continued contribution in various capacities and wishes him all the best in his future endeavour.”

Kumble later acknowledged the Indian cricket fans in his tweet.

Going by the news in the past few days, it is discernible to the fact that Kumble would not have been retained as the coach. That said, India attained many a new high under his guidance. In a gruelling 17-Test season, India beat West Indies, New Zealand, England, Australia, and Bangladesh. In addition, India won limited-overs series against New Zealand and England before ending up as runners-up in just-concluded ICC Champions Trophy 2017.
