Anurag Thakur defends ailing BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Anurag Thakur has defended their president Jagmohan Dalmiya, who is reportedly set to resign from his post. Dalmiya’s poor health has been preventing him from taking an active part in the administrative activities of the Indian cricket board, and his unavailability on most of the important occasions has been reportedly causing a lot of trouble in smooth functioning. So much so, that a report in one of the dailies suggested on Thursday that Dalmiya is in his last days as the president of the BCCI. Talking to Times of India on the topic of the BCCI president, Thakur said, “He [Dalmiya] is a seasoned administrator and we have benefited from his experience. All the steps taken by us in the recent times have been done under his guidance and with his support.”

Thakur said that the BCCI has started to find its feet again after string of controversies. He said, “The job of the BCCI is to run and administer cricket. The issues that you have mentioned above have very little bearing on the day-to-day functioning of the game. “Our national cricket side is doing well and recently managed to win a Test series in Sri Lanka after 22 years. Most of the committees of the BCCI have met before the start of the season. We have taken steps to revive NCA and make it a centre of excellence. We have announced to launch a coaching app by which digitally cricket coaching can reach every corner of the country. We also took a very major step of dealing with conflict of interest issue and majority of the associations have replied. He continued, “As far as working committee meeting is concerned it was better to adjourn the meeting then potentially facing contempt of court and spending crores of rupees on litigation later. The decision we took was in the interest of cricket and BCCI.”

When asked about N Srinivasan, Thakur said the matter is still sub-judice and he cannot comment over it. He added, “I have nothing personal against any individual. My priority is cricket and the BCCI. And whatever decision is taken, it will be a collective one.”
