The Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) junior selection committee on Tuesday axed the out of form Arjun Tendulkar from its 30-member Under-14 squad.

According to the Indian Express, Arjun was dropped from the probables list because of lack of performances in the selection trials and other tournaments. The 30-member Under-14 squad is set to have a off-season camp starting in a few days’ time.

“The selectors were firm that he has not performed well and there was no reason to include Arjun. He needs to go back and perform again to be picked for Mumbai’s junior side,” said an MCA insider.

The report added that Tendulkar junior did not score a single half-century in the summer vacation matches conducted by MCA. Another trial was conducted when best batsmen were put against top bowlers from the Verroc Cup, wherein Arjun failed again.

The MCA selectors also cited Arjun’s lack of intensity among the reason for the axe. MCA Joint Secretary PV Shetty was unavailable to comment whereas MCA junior selection committee Chairman Ramesh Vajge refused to comment, the report added.

“There are so many people involved with Arjun’s coaching but still his fielding is nowhere near today’s standards. He needs to improve a lot in that area. His batting is fine but he needs to convert starts into big scores like the other promising young players,” a selector said.

Another MCA insider said the selectors hope that Arjun shows improvement after the axe.

“We felt that this decision to drop him will change him for the better. Hopefully, in the next two years we might see a different Arjun. But for that to happen he needs to work harder” the insider said.
