John Buchanan has warned Mickey Arthur that the South African might have to overcome ‘cultural issues’ if he has to be successful in his new assignment.
Cricket Australia named Arthur as the head coach of the national team on Tuesday.
“No matter where you go … there are cultural issues, no question about that – even down to your language and your body language,” Buchanan said in an interview to ninemsn.com.
“Those things take time to be understood and merge into a new system.
“It is understanding how people tick … and is that something to do with being in a cricket team or something to do with the country?
“Therefore, you have to be reasonably careful when you make some decisions.
“I had some less memorable experiences in India with Knight Riders and Middlesex (in England in 1998) for those very reasons.”
Arthur will take over the national reins from the two-Test series against New Zealand starting in Brisbane on December 1.
