SLC wants Asela Gunaratne to play at least 2 Tests AFP

To strengthen their squad against favourites India, Sri Lanka have summoned Asela Gunaratne for the upcoming Test series. Gunaratne had picked up an injury during Sri Lanka’s home series against India to end his brilliant form. Gunaratne’s broken finger ruled him out for at least two months and as he has recovered, Sri Lanka want him back for at least two Tests. Also, there are news of the board not being happy with the selectors’ decision of dropping Kusal Mendis and Kaushal Silva from the tour.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Thilanga Sumathipala told dailymirror.lk, We have asked him to play at least two matches in the current Emerging Trophy Tournament to gain match fitness as we are hoping to send him to India to join the team as the 16th player.

About Mendis and Silva, Sumathipala said, “We had an hour-long discussion with the selectors as we thought, both these cricketers should have been considered for the tour. At the end, their decision prevailed. But we strongly feel both of them should have made into the team and even coach supported our view.”

However, Chairman of Selectors Graeme Labrooy says this will only benefit the players. “We don’t want a situation where he plays two more innings, gets two low scores and then drop him and destroy his confidence further. He has got age on his side and we want him to go on to become one of the greats of the game. We want him to play for another ten years.
