Australia were at 303 for three at stumps on Day One of the third Ashes Test at Old Trafford on Thursday. Australia captain Michael Clarke had won the toss and elected to bat.

The Aussies began on a positive note with openers Shane Watson and Chris Rogers putting together a stand worth 76 runs. When Watson was comparatively slow, Rogers was uncharacteristically quick. Once Watson was dismissed Usman Khawaja came into the middle.

Khawaja did not last long as he was given out caught behind off the bowling of England off-spinner Graeme Swann. Replays showed that the left-hander did not edge the delivery, but the third umpire ruled in favour of the bowling side.

Rogers was dismissed for 84. Clarke and Steven Smith then put together an unbeaten 174-run partnership. Clarke is batting on 125 while Smith is batting on 70.

Brief scores:

Australia 303 for 3 (Chris Rogers 84, Michael Clarke 125*, Steven Smith 70*; Graeme Swann 2 for 81) vs England.
