Ashwin becomes 7th Indian bowler to bag five-for on Test debut

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the seventh Indian bowler to take five-for on Test debut in the first Test at the Kotla, here on Tuesday.
In total, seven bowlers have bagged five or more wickets on Test debut for India. The first bowler to achieve the feat was fast bowler Mohammad Nissar in India’s first Test match at Lord’s in 1932. The last one to was Amit Mishra against Australia at Mohali three years ago.
In fact, Ashwin’s six for 47 is the second-best effort by an Indian bowler on his maiden appearance in Test. Ashwin’s match haul of nine wickets is bettered by only one Indian – Hirwani’s 16 on debut against West Indies. In fact, Hirwani got eight wickets in each of the innings.
Others to have achieved the record include Vaman Kumar, Syed Abid Ali and Dilip Doshi
Except for Mohammad Nissar and Abid Ali, all the others have been on home soil.
