AUS vs NZ: Cameron Green bats through the day following a magnificent century

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green emphasized the importance of having a player capable of occupying the crease for an entire day, following his century against New Zealand on the opening day of their inaugural Test at the Basin Reserve Ground in Wellington.

Green’s innings saw him compile an unbeaten 103 off 155 deliveries, punctuated by 16 boundaries on the first day. His remarkable performance contributed significantly to Australia’s tally of 279 for 9 from 85 overs by day’s end.

Following his century, Green remarked on the challenging batting conditions, emphasizing the necessity for a player to anchor the innings. This marked Green’s second Test century, achieved over the course of 27 matches representing Australia in the longest format of the game.

“Yeah, obviously it feels really good. I think mainly just for where we are with the team. Obviously, it was a pretty tough wicket out there and I felt like the boys played pretty well and just one of those days and I think someone just needed a bat through, so, yeah, it was about it to me,” said Green.

Discussing his partnership with Mitchell Marsh, Green mentioned his familiarity with Marsh’s playing style and tailored their collaboration accordingly. Green and Marsh combined for a 69-run partnership, effectively steering Australia out of a challenging situation in Wellington.

“Yeah, I was finding it quite tough out there and I’m pretty happy. I kind of know how Mitch is going to play. I’ve obviously played quite a lot of times with each other in Western Australia, so I knew play your shots and that’s probably what you need to do out there,” Green added.

Green went on to say that New Zealand in on top and Australia will have to bowl well on Day 2 to get back in the game. Australia will be looking to end their innings on a high and aim to restrict the hosts on Day 2 in Wellington.

“I think, speaking to a lot of guys, it’s a lot about the overhead. So I think we have to wake up tomorrow morning and then see what the overheads look like. I reckon they’re probably just on top. They got a pretty quality batting lineup and, yeah, we’ve got a bowl well tomorrow,” said Green.
