Australia have depth for World Cup: Brett Lee

Brett Lee, the former Australia fast bowler, feels that the hosts have the depth in the squad for the ICC World Cup 2015. The mega event will be played in Australia and New Zealand starting February 14, 2015. Lee feels Australia are good enough to shield themselves from the pressure of being the home side and go on to lift the title. Australia have won the World Cup four times — in 1987, 1999, 2003 and 2007. Lee was a part of the squad in 2003.

“Fingers crossed the boys can win it. We’ve definitely got the right guys, players that can go out there and play a role. Obviously you can only pick 11 players on the day, but we’ve got depth in our batting, with our keepers and then we’ve obviously got the quicks as well,” Lee was quoted by Daily Telegraph.

Lee also backed New South Wales paceman Sean Abbott for spot in the World Cup squad.  This despite Australia having a plethora of options in their roster to go for the big event. Lee also feels that Abbott could be a good all-round option. “He’s bowling fast and well and the thing I’ve been impressed with over the last few weeks is his pace, he’s maintained it, if not got quicker. But what I’ve seen over the last couple of weeks playing with him at the Sixers is his change up, he’s got a wonderful change up. He’s like the complete cricketer, he smacks them at the end, so he’s classed as an all-rounder.”

Speaking about the Phil Hughes tragedy and the impact on Abbott, Lee said, “I would love to see him there, obviously after what he’s been through too. He’s obviously got to be picked on his cricketing merit and he’s done extremely well over the last couple of weeks with the Sixers.”
