Australia finished on a score of 70 for the loss of one wicket at lunch on the opening day of the second Test against West Indies at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Saturday. Usman Khawaja and Joe Burns were batting on 27 and 14 respectively, while Jerome Taylor was the sole wicket-taker for the West Indians, removing David Warner for a 12-ball 23. Australia were off to a flying start, thanks to some aggressive, Twenty20-style batting by Warner right from the start of the innings, before his dismissal as well as a miserly spell by West Indian captain Jason Holder (5-3-2-0) restricted Australia’s run-flow thereafter. The hosts will rely on Burns and the in-form Khawaja to come good in this innings, and guide their side to a commanding position at the end of the day. West Indies earlier won the toss, and captain Holder opted to bat after perceiving the conditions to be bowling-friendly. The visitors made one change in their playing XI, awarding Carlos Brathwaite his maiden Test cap in place of the injured Shannon Gabriel. Australia had already announced their team a day before the start of play, with Khawaja coming into the side after exhibiting a good run of form in the recent games. As a result, Shaun Marsh had to sit out for the second Test, despite scoring a majestic 182 in the one-sided first Test at Hobart.
