Australia fought back with quick wickets as they managed to take the wickets of Ian Bell and Eoin Morgan in the same over reducing England to 254 in 41.4 overs. Bell was out after scoring a brilliant century as he was dismissed by Gurinder Sandhu.

Earlier, Ian Bell scored his 33rd fifty. Bell became only the second English batsman to cross 5,000 ODI runs. Bell got to the landmark when he crossed to 10. James Anderson became the most-capped England player across formats when he took field. Anderson has now played 304 matches across formats, including 99 Tests and 19 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

Australia won the toss and chose to field first. Steven Smith, captaining the side for the first time on debut, announced at the toss that there were three changes: David Warner, Shane Watson, and George Bailey had to miss out, and were replaced by Shaun Marsh, Cameron White, and Moises Henriques. England went in with the same side.
