Skipper Preston Mommsen and Freddie Coleman were the batsmen dismissed, both departing for ducks after facing two and seven balls respectively. Mommsen was caught at at backward square-leg by Mitchell Starc off a bouncer by all-rounder Shane Watson, while Coleman edged a Mitchell Johnson delivery to the slips, where Australian captain Michael Clarke collected a safe catch. Australia earlier won the toss and elected to bowl, with Pat Cummins replacing Xavier Doherty as expected.
