As Australia look to rope in rookie players to help the team earn a face-saving victory in the Test series against South Africa down under, Nic Maddinson, amidst an expected call up, hopes to bring in consistency in his bowling. The bowler admitted of not being much consistent in his previous appearances and has said that he is working on his setbacks to better his skills and fit in in a team where the stakes are really high. As quoted by nine.com.au, Maddinson said, “I probably haven’t been as consistent as I would have liked over he past couple of years in the four-day format. But that’s the area I’ve probably worked hard at compared to some of the others. It’s a mental battle and that’s probably where my game needs to develop a little bit. What I’ve tried to work on in the past 18 months, especially in my four-day game, is developing a game plan which will be consistent on any wicket and in any conditions.”

Both captain Steven Smith and his deputy David Warner are good friend of Maddinson, who said about it, “there’s a bit of a relationship there and I’d be stupid not to get any of their advice.”

The cricketer admitted to the pressure that is there to maintain one’s place in the Australia team. “And rightly so. It’s the Australian team, so if you’re not up to the mark there’s someone else who can take your spot, so of course I’d feel a bit of pressure,” he said.

He also spoke about playing with the pink ball. “I guess you’ve got to probably put it out of your head that it (the pink ball) might behave a little bit differently and just go in there and watch the ball and play it as you see it,” he said.

“I’ve been guilty in the past of thinking a little bit too much out of the box and not just trusting my game plan and trusting my strengths so I guess that’s probably a focus for me this week,” he concluded.
