Mohammad Ayazuddin, the 18-year-old son of former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin, is in a critical condition at the Apollo Hospital and on a ventilator after being involved in a high-speed motorbike crash on Sunday morning.
Â
Ayaz and his 16-year-old cousin Ajmal-ur-Rahman, who was with him on the bike, both suffered head injuries. Ajmal later died in the hospital.
Â
Ayaz, a promising cricketer in Hyderabad school cricket, is the younger of Azharuddinâs two sons from his former wife Noureen.
Â
Ayaz, a second year B Com student at St Mary’s College, is said to resemble his father in his batting style, who was known for his elegant and wristy stroke play. Ayaz is also an useful off-break bowler.
Â
However, not much is known about his progress as a player since his school days. Its his elder brother, Ashaduddin, who gained attention in late 2008 when he was selected for a trials conducted by Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Â
A leading national daily reported Ayaz had succumbed to his injuries but subsequently corrected that news.
Â
Azharuddin, a Member of Parliament, is rushing back home from London on hearing the news of his sonâs accident.
