Azmatullah Omarazi secures record, becomes First player in History of Champions Trophy to achieve THIS feat

Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarazi secured his name in books of history during their Champions Trophy 2025 clash against Australia, a virtual quarter-final with both the teams being in a do-or-die situation to secure a place in semi-final.

As he kept giving a show of his all-round performance in the Champions Trophy, during the clash against England, Omarazi secured his name in books of records as he became the first-ever player in the history of the tournament to take five wickets and the score more than 40 runs in the same match. He scored 41 runs off 37 balls.

Omarazi also became the second-ever player who has scored a fifty, and taken a five-wicket haul in the same edition of the tournament. The only other player to secure this feat was South Africa’s legend Jacques Kallis.

Kallis had scored 113 runs in 100 balls in the semi-final clash against Sri Lanka in the inaugural edition of the Champions Trophy (1998) at Dhaka. Then, in the final clash against West Indies, he took five wickets for just 30 runs.

Omarazi giving a spectacular performance with both the bat and the ball has come as he won the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year award in 2024. He is the first cricketer from Afghanistan who has won an annual award by the cricketing body.
