Bangladesh hopes of making the quarterfinals suffered a severe jolt after South African bowlers triggered a top-order collapse at the Shere-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
Â
Lonwabo Tsotosobe, playing his first match of the tournament, did major damage upfront, putting Bangladesh on the mat. The left-arm seamer extracted Tamim Iqbal when he tried to pull the bowler but only managed to feather the ball to wicketkeeper van Wyke â a decision that was decided through the review route.
Â
Tsotsobe then dismissed Bangladeshâs in-form batsman – Imran Kayes. The batsman offered no shot to a ball that pitched around off-stump and nipped back. It was a sweet revenge for the bowler after the batsman made room for himself and clubbed him over cover for a sizzling boundary in his previous over.
Â
South Africa inducted spinner Johan Botha as the opening ball partner for Tsotosobe, and he didnât disappoint as well. Bowling a nagging line and length, Botha dried up the runs at one end and allowed Tsotsobe to attack the batsmen at the other end.
Â
Bothaâs perseverance was rewarded when he trapped Junaid Siddique lbw for 2.
Â
Bangladesh innings suffered a further dent when Tsotsobe snared his third wicket, showing the pavilion way to Shahriar Nafees for 5.
Â
Robin Peterson came into the attack and bowled a miserly spell like Botha. He ended Mushfiqur Rahimâs unconvincing knock through a catching brilliance from Graeme Smith. Peterson bowled a flighted delivery which Mushfiqur had to play it and got an edge and Smith pulled off a blinder at slip.
Â
Mahmudullah became the sixth Bangladesh batsmen to perish when he was run out for 5.
Â
Captain Shakib Al Hasan picked two confident boundaries of Tsotsobe and appeared to throw a fight to the opposition but Peterson had him caught behind for 30 before dislodging Shafiul Islam for a duck as Bangladesh face the prospect of being handed a heavy defeat.
Â
Brief Scores: Bangladesh 61 for 8 in 24 overs (Lonwabe Tsotsobe 3 for 14, Robin Peterson 3 for 4, Johan Botha 1 for 23,) vs South Africa 284 for 8 in 50 overs (Jacques Kallis 69, Faf du Plessis 52, Hashim Amla 51, Graeme Smith 45; Rubel Hossain 3 for 56, Shakib al Hasan 2 for 46)Â vs.
