Few hours ago, news broke out of Sri Lanka limited-overs captain Angelo Mathews‘ injury. According to the latest update, he is ruled out of Sri Lanka’s second ODI in the ongoing Bangladesh tri-nation series versus hosts. A hamstring injury crept up for the 30-year-old during Zimbabwe clash. As result, Dinesh Chandimal will lead the side in his absence. In addition, Chandimal will be Sri Lanka’s sixth ODI captain since July 2017.

Sri Lanka lost their tournament-opener versus Zimbabwe by 12 runs on Wednesday. They would have hoped for Mathews’ presence, but won’t be the case anymore. Nonetheless, the worrying aspect is that Mathews’ injury stands a chance to rule him out of the entire series. Nothing is confirmed as of now.

“Angelo went for a scan today and the reports have been sent to England for the doctors who have been treating him to take a further look and give us an assessment,” an official told Cricbuzz. Mathews will remain in Dhaka until the assessment is made. A call will be made on whether he needs to remain in Dhaka or fly back home on Friday morning. Sadeera Samarawickrama will be flown in as his stand-by.

Danushka Gunathilaka and Niroshan Dickwella have a chance to replace Mathews in Friday’s encounter versus Bangladesh. Sri Lanka are the only side without a win in the series involving Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.
