Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram added 243 runs for the first wicket, the eighth highest opening partnership for South Africa. The in-form duo went all guns blazing against the fallible Bangladeshi bowlers. Captain Mushfiqur Rahim used as many as seven bowlers to make inroads on a green-layered track, but they failed to bowl consistently in the right channel.

Elgar scored his consecutive hundred and 10th of his career. Such was his domination in the first session that he blasted runs at a strike rate over 80. He continued in a similar fashion post lunch but soon fell, departing for 113. Subashish Roy, the only wicket-taker so far, had him caught.

Markram, on the other hand, continued his good work. He is unbeaten on 135 before tea, taking the score to 256 for 1. At the other end is Hashim Amla unbeaten on 1.

In the absence of the injured Morne Morkel, South Africa added Duanne Oliver. Bangladesh, on the other hand, made 4 changes: they drafted in Soumya Sarkar for the injured Tamim Iqbal, while Taijul Islam, Rubel Hossain and Subashis Roy were added to bolster the weakened team. Apart from Tamim, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed and Shafiul Islam were benched.

Brief scores:

South Africa 256 for 1 (Deal Elgar 113, Aiden Markram 135; Subashis Roy 1 for 59) vs Bangladesh.
