Former joint secretary Pravin Barve on Tuesday withdrew from the presidential race for the July 15th Mumbai Cricket Association election to make it a straight contest between union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar for the top post.

Vengsarkar, a vice-president like Deshmukh in the outgoing committee, is striving to break the two-decade-long stranglehold of politicians in the MCA, and is being supported by former cricketers Milind Rege, Karsan Ghavri, Balvinder Singh Sandhu and Chandrakant Pandit.

Rege is involved in a five-way fight for two vice- presidents’ posts with Shripad Halbe, Ashish Shelar, Vijay Patil and Ratnakar Shetty.

While Shelar and Shetty are in the Sharad Pawar-Bal Mahaddalkar panel, Halbe and Patil are fighting lone battles as independents.

Barve, however, is involved in a three-way fight for the lone treasurer’s post with Vengsarkar panel member Ravi Mandrekar and Pawar panelist Ravi Savant.

Former Test cricketer and ex-India coach Lalchand Rajput is also involved in a three-way contest for two joint secretaries’ posts along with Nitin Dalal and P V Shetty, both members in the Pawar panel.

There are 29 contestants for eleven berths in the managing committee after the last day of withdrawal of nominations.
