Adelaide Strikers recorded their fourth win of the ongoing Big Bash League season when they beat Melbourne Stars by a comfortable margin of 41 runs on Friday.

Batting first at the Adelaide Oval, Strikers posted 178 thanks to half-century from Colin Ingram, a handy innings from captain Travis Head and a late surge from Jonathan Wells. Stars threw away a blazing start to fold for 137 in 19.2 overs with Ben Laughlin claiming 3/19 from 3.2 overs.

Stars captain Nic Maddinson won the bat flip and opted to field. Jackson Bird and Liam Plunkett sent the openers packing early with Strikers struggling to 32/2 in six overs.

Head and Ingram combined for a 74-run stand for the third wicket before being separated. Head struck a four and three sixes in his 31-ball 43 becoming Plunkett’s second victim. Ingram went on to complete his fifty and fell to Plunkett after scoring 57 off 41 with four fours and two sixes. Wells then struck 32 off 14 pushing the final tally into challenging zone.

Punkett finished with figures of 4/36.

Unlike Strikers, Stars were off to a flier with the openers Evan Gulbis and Ben Dunk adding 49 runs in five overs. Laughlin struck to break the partnership from which their chase never recovered.

Regular strikes kept them on the back foot. Gulbis top-scored with 37 followed by Dwayne Bravo’s 33 off 23. Liam O’ Connor, Michael Nesser and Wes Agar chipped in with a couple of wickets each.

Strikers overtook Melbourne Renegades in the points tally on the basis of superior net-run rate with both the teams on eight points each.

Brief Scores: Adelaide Strikers 179/5 (Colin Ingram 57, Travis Head 43; Liam Plunkett 4/36) beat Melbourne Stars 137 (Evan Gulbis 37, Dwayne Bravo 33; Ben Laughlin 3/19)
