Before the second ODI against South Africa on Wednesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly called a meeting with India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, the head of the selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, and several other high-ranking officials to urgently discuss a few crucial issues. The news coincides with speculation about the future of Team India mainstays Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom have returned to form with outstanding performances in recent games.
The conversation is expected to include head coach Gautam Gambhir, national selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, and joint secretary Prabhtej Singh Bhatia, according to a report in Sportstar. The article did not specify whether Mithun Manhas, the recently appointed head of the BCCI, would be present. Senior players like Kohli, Rohit, and others seem unlikely to be invited, given that the meeting is scheduled for match day.
According to a senior BCCI official quoted in the report, the purpose of the meeting is to ensure “selection consistency” within the team while keeping long-term development and overall success in mind.
The meeting aims to address the shortcomings identified in the Indian team during the recent home Test series defeat against South Africa. With both Gambhir and Agarkar present, the board hopes to gain clarity on key management issues and determine the next steps accordingly.
“During the home Test season, there have been instances of confusing tactics on and off the field. We want clarity and forward planning, especially with the next Test series eight months away,” the official said.
“India will be favourites to defend the T20 World Cup next year and strong contenders for the ODI World Cup after that, so we want these issues resolved quickly,” the official added.

These circumstances raise the possibility of a communication breakdown between senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and the team management. Reports had suggested that the BCCI wanted Kohli to come out of his Test retirement, but after the Ranchi ODI on Sunday, the batting legend dismissed the speculation.
