Ben Rohrer and Vivian Richards were seated next to each other on flights between Indian cities during Indian Premier League (IPL) 2013 since the pair’s surnames begin with ‘R’ which has benefitted the former in getting a CPL contract.

That alphabetical alignment has led to Rohrer getting a place in Antigua Hawksbill, where Richards is the coach, at the inaugural Caribbean Premier League (CPL) reports Sydney Morning Herald.

Rohrer,32, has clearly impressed Richards during his brief stint with the Delhi Daredevils. Rohrer learnt a lot from Richards. “He spent four or five weeks with us, and it was brilliant to pick his brain,” Rohrer said. ”He is one of those guys that everyone loved watching play and wanted to be like growing up. He just had that air of confidence about him, and the way that he played was ahead of his time. He would have been great at the Twenty20 style now.”

Rohrer said that he was lucky that his surname starts with ‘R’ since it gave him an opportunity to sit next to Richards. Rohrer also said that Richards is down to earth.

Rohrer was snapped up as a late replacement for Steven Smith — who is busy at the Ashes — and joins a team coached by Richards that also includes Ricky Ponting.

“T20 has just opened so many doors — it’s great for domestic players who aren’t quite at the international level to be able to earn some good money around the world,” said Rohrer.

The CPL starts from July 30th in Kingston, Jamaica.
