Ben Stokes has surpassed MS Dhoni to become the most successful captain in a 250+ run chase. Stokes-led England chased 251 run target against Australia in the 3rd Ashes Test to keep the series alive.

This was Stokes’ fifth win as captain in a 250+ run chase, which is one more than India’s talismanic captain MS Dhoni, who led team India to win in four matches while chasing a score of more than 250.

The Ashes 2023 has been a stellar series so far, with all three games going down to the wire. Australia won the first two games, putting England in a must-win situation in the third game.

Australia batted first in the third Test and posted a below-par score of 263, courtesy of Mitchell Marsh’s 118, before bowling out England for 237. Things could have been worse for England had Ben Stokes not played a whirlwind 80-run knock.

Australia delivered another shambolic show with the bat, getting bowled out for 224 and setting England a target of 251 runs. England started well, adding 42 runs for the first wicket before Mitchell Starc ran riot and rattled the England batting lineup.

England were reduced to 171-6, still 80 away from the target but a composed 75-run knock by Harry Brook and Chris Woakes’ unbeaten 32 helped England win the game by 3 wickets.

Ben Stokes has been on fire with the bat in the series and almost pulled off a heist in the second Test, scoring 155 in a chase of 371. Stokes’ wicket, however, helped Australia bounce back and win the game by 43 runs.

Ben Stokes Delighted With Win In 3rd Ashes Test

Ben Stokes was happy after getting over the line in the third Test.

“Another down-to-the-wire game. Nice to get over the line and keep our hopes alive. Won the toss, we could have batted and bowled. Looked a good wicket. Saw the way Mitch Marsh batted. Came in and took the game on. The outfield was on the quick side. We had Woody and Woakesy back in and they did well.

“We picked teams and look how they can impact us in the game. We try to see how they can be influential in the game. I didn’t realise that Woakes hasn’t played a Test for so long, he is Mr. Consistent. Having someone who can bat like him batting at 8 helps us. Hope he can do something similar when he plays next,” he said after the match.
